Genre: Metal
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA
Shows: Normally AA (all ages)
Sadly for my parents, I really enjoy metal. I live for the heavy breakdowns. I love the obnoxiously loud noise, the terrifying violence brought out in the crowd, but most of all I love the support this specific “community” has shown at every show during my time here in Philadelphia. Of all genres i’ve worked with, I never thought i’d say the metal scene would be one of my favorites — but here we are and it is.
This weeks featured band is not for the faint of heart. If you think you’d enjoy a stripped down, late 90’s - early 2000’s Slipknot, you should press play, and give this band a chance.
PUBLIC WARNING: I highly suggest turning down your volume to a comfortable level and gradually raising it to your desired volume.
After a strategic change in vocalist, Philadelphia metalcore band, Varials, took 2015 full force with album Failure//Control that can only be described as intense. If there’s one thing I learned working with these 4 guys is that they don’t perform to impress, these guys perform to get the mosh pit so bloodthirty, no one is safe — not even the venue. Seriously. There’s even a video of some guy getting ass naked at one of their shows and moshing into everyone which ultimately made it onto Rob Dyrdek's show Ridiculousness on MTV.
With Sean Rauchut viciously abusing his drums, guitarist James Hohenwarter and bassist Mike Foley filling the voids with with heavy riffs and slamming beatdowns, vocalist Travis leads vocally by screaming like Satan himself. Together, their shows become some of the heaviest and most energy packed shows you could possibly find yourself at. Earlier this year (2016) Varials teamed up with Delaware based band, Vicious Embrace to put out split EP: Absolution. Although Absolution is definitely worthy of a listen, I personally suggest exploring Varials’ previous album to be a better representation of their truer sound.
You can catch Varials in a couple of weeks, September 10th supporting Texas death metal band I AM on The Tour to Hell. The Philly date will be held at West Kensington Ministry, a local church turned into a mid-size DIY (do it yourself,) all ages venue that provides an intimate war-zone. Come up and say Hi, if you see me there. Try not to get hit.
